Electric parking brake service mode: how to reset the EPB with a scan tool
New rear brake pads, but the car has an electric parking brake? Then the actuator on the caliper usually has to be moved into service mode with a scan tool first. We explain how it works, when it is possible without a tester, why calibration follows – and which tools in our shop have an EPB function (prices as of 04.11.2026).

What a scan tool should do for the EPB
- ⌘Open and close service modeThe EPB function electrically retracts the spindle in the caliper (“maintenance mode”, “pad replacement”) and moves it forward again after assembly – depending on tool, model and year.
- ⇄Calibration and pad thicknessAfter the replacement the control unit learns the new position. Depending on the manufacturer this includes a calibration and on some models (e.g. Audi A8 according to HELLA) entering the new pad thickness.
- ✦Fault memory and live dataRead and clear EPB faults, view switch states and test actuators – so you find the cause when the parking brake won't release or the warning light is on.
Connection in the driver's footwell
The scan tool connects to the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell under the steering wheel. Ideally select the vehicle by its VIN – the tool then only shows the EPB functions stored for your model.
Replacing rear brake pads with an electric parking brake: 4 steps
This is how a pad replacement with a scan tool typically works – the tool shows the exact menus and conditions for your vehicle:
- PrepareRaise the vehicle safely, chock the front wheels and connect a battery charger – according to AUTODOC, EPB systems are sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Connect the tool to the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell, select the vehicle by VIN and read the fault memory.
- Activate service modeIn the EPB function select e.g. “Maintenance” and “Replace brake pads”. The control unit turns the spindle back and the brake is free (ZF/TRW). Only then can the brake piston be pushed back (HELLA).
- Replace the padsRemove the caliper, replace pads and retaining springs, check the guides and reassemble everything to the specified torque. Pushing the piston back raises the brake fluid level – check it (AUTODOC).
- Close, calibrate, checkSelect “Close brake” in the tool and calibrate the system; this resets the internal pad wear indicator (ZF/TRW). Then read the fault memory again and check the parking brake carefully.
Without a scan tool? Only if the manufacturer allows it
On the vast majority of vehicles with an electric parking brake, a scan tool is required for pad replacement – otherwise neither service mode nor calibration can be carried out (AUTODOC). Some models allow a simplified procedure according to the manufacturer's manual. On cable-pull systems such as the BMW 7 Series (E65), HELLA says the brake shoes can be replaced without a scan tool – followed by a basic adjustment. Because this cannot be generalised: check the repair manual for the exact model first.
Important: never force the piston back
Without service mode you risk damaging the actuator motor, according to TOPDON. So never push the piston of an EPB caliper back with pliers or force, and do not disconnect the scan tool during the routine – otherwise the caliper may stay in an intermediate position (Premium Diagnostics).
Parking brake won't release or warning light on: what to check?
According to HELLA, troubleshooting starts on the brake tester, followed by a visual inspection and diagnosis:
- Brake pads or shoes, the brake cables on cable-pull systems, possible leaks
- Battery and on-board voltage – a weak battery can cause faults during the routine
- Fault memory, measured values and actuator tests of the motors
- after an emergency release: initialisation according to the manufacturer's manual
For the emergency release, some models carry a special tool in the vehicle tool kit (HELLA). According to HELLA, the electric parking brake can only be function-tested on a roller brake tester, not on a plate tester. After every repair, clear the fault memory and check the braking effect.

Resetting the electric parking brake: workshop or your own scan tool?
1. Workshop: service mode and calibration with the workshop tester; the price depends on the workshop.
2. Your own scan tool: buy once and use it for every pad replacement – plus fault codes, oil service, battery or DPF, e.g. MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) or MittmannLive TopScan Pro (€199.00).
3. Without a tool: only if the manufacturer's manual for your model provides a procedure without a tester (according to HELLA e.g. on cable-pull systems).
Our recommendation
For DIY mechanics with a smartphone: MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) with lifetime updates or MittmannLive TopScan Pro (€199.00). If you want a standalone tablet with coding, choose the THINKSCAN 689BT (€679.90) or the MUCAR 892BT Pro (€699.00) with topology and J2534. For workshops, the TOPDON Phoenix Lite 3 (€814.90) is a good fit. What “lifetime updates” means is explained in Scan tool without subscription. Send us your VIN – we check the EPB function before you buy.

FAQ
Can I reset the electric parking brake with a scan tool?
On many vehicles, yes: the EPB service function retracts the spindle into service mode and moves it forward again after the pad replacement. According to manufacturer or product information, tools with an EPB function include the MUCAR BT200 MAX, TopScan Pro, THINKSCAN 689BT, MUCAR 892BT Pro and Phoenix Lite 3. Whether it is available for your model depends on year and brake system – we are happy to check by VIN.
Is it possible without a scan tool?
On most vehicles with an actuator on the caliper, no: according to AUTODOC, neither service mode nor calibration can be carried out without a tool. Exceptions only exist if the manufacturer's manual provides a procedure without a tester – according to HELLA e.g. on the cable-pull system of the BMW 7 Series (E65).
What happens if I push the piston back without service mode?
According to TOPDON, you risk damaging the actuator motor. The piston can only be pushed back once the spindle has been retracted electrically (HELLA).
Does the parking brake need to be calibrated after the pad change?
Yes, according to ZF/TRW the system is calibrated after closing the brake; this resets the internal pad wear indicator. Then check the fault memory. On some models the new pad thickness is also entered (HELLA, Audi A8).
Does this also work on new VW and Audi models?
On many models, yes, via the EPB function or basic setting. On newer VAG vehicles some control unit functions are additionally protected by SFD and need to be unlocked – read more in our article on VAG SFD. We are happy to check by VIN whether your vehicle is affected.
Why won't the electric parking brake release?
Common reasons are a weak battery, system faults or a mechanical cause at the pads, cables or actuator. According to HELLA, first check on the brake tester, then carry out a visual inspection and a diagnosis with fault memory, measured values and actuator tests. Some models have an emergency release for emergencies.
