DPF regeneration with a scan tool: how to force it, how long, what it costs
The particulate filter light is on and the regeneration drive didn't help? On many diesels, a regeneration can then be started with a scan tool while parked. We explain how it works, which conditions apply, how long it takes, when it no longer helps – and which tools in our shop offer a DPF function (prices as of 03.11.2026).

What a scan tool should do for the DPF
- ⌘Soot load & live dataDisplay the soot mass (calculated and measured via the differential pressure sensor), differential pressure and exhaust temperature – so you can see whether a regeneration is needed and whether it works.
- ⇄Start a stationary regenerationThe “DPF regeneration” service function triggers a service or forced regeneration in the engine control unit. The tool guides you through the conditions and shows the progress – depending on tool, model and engine.
- ✦Fault memory & causesFaults in the differential pressure sensor, temperature sensors or EGR often block the regeneration. A good tool reads the engine fault memory so you can fix the cause first.
Connection in the driver's footwell
The scan tool connects to the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell under the steering wheel. Ideally select the vehicle by its VIN – the tool then only shows the functions stored for your engine.
DPF regeneration with a scan tool in 4 steps
This is how a stationary regeneration typically works – the tool shows the exact conditions for your vehicle before you start:
- PreparePark outdoors on level ground, away from buildings and flammable material – never in a closed garage (risk of fire and carbon monoxide). Tank at least a quarter full, engine at operating temperature (approx. 90 °C), gearbox in N or P, parking brake applied.
- Connect and read faultsConnect the tool to the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell under the steering wheel, select the vehicle by VIN and read the engine control unit's fault memory. Fix active faults first – otherwise the regeneration often won't start.
- Check the load and startCheck soot mass and differential pressure in the live data, then select the “DPF regeneration” service function and follow the instructions. Engine speed rises and fans start. Do not interrupt the process (usually 20–40 minutes).
- Check the resultAfterwards read the soot load again, clear repaired faults and take a test drive. If the load stays high or the regeneration keeps aborting, have the pressure sensors and EGR checked by a workshop.
Regeneration drive first, then the scan tool
According to ADAC, when the particulate filter warning light comes on, the first step is usually a regeneration drive under higher load as described in the owner's manual. MAHLE advises driving until the light goes out after a successful regeneration. If that doesn't work, a forced regeneration follows – in a workshop or with your own scan tool. According to a measurement by diesel-fakten.de, 10-minute trips are not enough; on a VW EA288 evo engine the active regeneration was completed after about 20 minutes of driving.
Important: ash cannot be burnt off
During regeneration the soot burns; a small residue remains in the filter as ash – also from engine oil. Once the permitted ash load is reached, according to ADAC even a workshop regeneration no longer helps: the filter must be removed and cleaned (approx. €400–500) or replaced (approx. €1,000–3,000). If the soot load is too high, the engine control unit often blocks forced regeneration to prevent damage.
If the DPF keeps clogging: typical causes
Before the next regeneration, ADAC, MAHLE and TOPDON recommend checking:
- Mostly short trips or driving in eco mode
- A faulty EGR valve or faulty pressure or temperature sensors
- The wrong engine oil – follow the manufacturer's low-ash specification
- Frequently interrupted regenerations, e.g. because the engine is switched off again and again
Before the emissions test: in Germany, Euro 6 diesels may emit no more than 250,000 particles per cm³ since 1 July 2023. MAHLE recommends bringing the car to operating temperature beforehand, e.g. on the motorway. According to MAHLE, no vehicle manufacturer approves DPF cleaners added to the fuel tank.

Prices as of 03.11.2026 according to our product pages; cleaning and replacement costs according to ADAC. Functions according to the manufacturers and our product pages; DPF regeneration and live values depend on tool, software version, make, model, engine, year and control unit – they are not available on every diesel. We are happy to check the function you need by VIN before you buy.
DPF regeneration cost: drive, workshop or your own scan tool?
1. Regeneration drive: costs only fuel and, according to ADAC, is the first step – as described in the owner's manual.
2. Workshop: emergency or forced regeneration when driving is no longer enough; the price depends on the workshop.
3. Your own scan tool: buy once and also use it for fault codes, oil service, EPB or battery, e.g. MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) or THINKSCAN 689BT (€679.90).
4. Cleaning or a new filter: approx. €400–500 for cleaning, approx. €1,000–3,000 for a new filter (ADAC) – needed when ash has clogged the filter.
Our recommendation
For diesel drivers and DIY mechanics with a smartphone: MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) with lifetime updates or MittmannLive TopScan Pro (€199.00). If you want a standalone tablet with coding, choose the THINKSCAN 689BT (€679.90) or the MUCAR 892BT Pro (€699.00) with topology and J2534. For workshops, the TOPDON Phoenix Lite 3 (€814.90) is a good fit. What “lifetime updates” means is explained in Scan tool without subscription. Send us your VIN and engine – we check the DPF function before you buy.

FAQ
Can I force a DPF regeneration with a scan tool?
On many diesels, yes: the “DPF regeneration” service function starts a stationary regeneration. According to manufacturer or product information, tools offering it include the MUCAR BT200 MAX, TopScan Pro, THINKSCAN 689BT, MUCAR 892BT Pro and Phoenix Lite 3. Whether the function is available for your engine depends on model, year and control unit – we are happy to check by VIN.
How long does a DPF regeneration take?
Stationary with a scan tool, usually 20–40 minutes according to TOPDON. While driving, the active regeneration on a VW EA288 evo was completed after about 20 minutes in one measurement. Do not interrupt the process.
How hot does the particulate filter get during a burn-off?
According to ADAC, soot only burns above about 550 °C; during active regeneration the exhaust temperature rises to around 600 °C. That is why you should only regenerate outdoors and away from flammable material.
What does a DPF regeneration cost?
A regeneration drive costs only fuel. Workshop prices vary. Your own scan tool with a DPF function is available from €96.90. If the filter is clogged with ash, cleaning costs approx. €400–500 and a new filter approx. €1,000–3,000 according to ADAC.
Why won't the DPF regeneration start?
Usually a condition is not met (engine temperature, fuel level, gear position, parking brake), active faults are stored in the engine control unit, or the soot load is so high that the control unit blocks forced regeneration. Fix the faults first or ask a workshop.
Does a DPF cleaner added to the tank help?
According to MAHLE, no vehicle manufacturer approves DPF cleaners added to the fuel tank. According to ADAC, ash can be removed neither by regeneration nor by additives.
