Best Scan Tool for DIY Mechanics? 5 Tools up to €700 Compared
If you work on your own car, you need more than a basic OBD2 code reader – but not necessarily a workshop tablet costing several thousand euros. We compare five scan tools from our range, from €96.90 to €679.90: form factor, full-system diagnostics, active tests, coding, updates and running costs – with manufacturer information and shop prices (as of 25 Oct 2026).

Three questions before you buy a scan tool
- ⌘Smartphone adapter or tablet?Adapters such as the MUCAR BT200 MAX or the TopScan Pro work with an app on your own smartphone (Android/iOS, smartphone not included). Handhelds and tablets such as the ArtiDiag800 BT2, MUCAR 892BT or THINKSCAN 689BT come with their own display, battery and software – handy if you look after several vehicles.
- ⇄Updates and running costsMUCAR, TOPDON (ArtiDiag800 BT2) and THINKCAR UK state lifetime free updates for the tools compared. The TopScan Pro includes one year of updates; after that, the renewal costs €110.90 per year with us. So calculate the costs over several years – details in our guide to tools without a subscription.
- ✦Coding only where the manufacturer states itECU coding (e.g. changing comfort settings, adapting control units after replacement) is stated by MUCAR for the 892BT and by THINKCAR UK for the 689BT – vehicle-dependent in each case. If you want to code, choose a tool for which the manufacturer explicitly lists this function.
What a tool up to €700 can do – and what it can't
According to the manufacturers, all five tools read fault codes in supported control units, show live data and offer active tests and service functions. Whether a specific function is available on your car depends on make, model, year, control unit and software version. Vehicles with a Security Gateway (e.g. FCA, Mercedes, Renault/Dacia, VW Group) usually need a separate unlock for advanced functions – see Security Gateway explained.

Checklist: finding the right scan tool
1. List your vehicles: make, model, year and VIN of every car you look after.
2. Define your tasks: only read and clear codes, reset services (oil, brakes, battery), active tests – or coding as well?
3. Calculate running costs over three years: e.g. TopScan Pro €199.00 plus two renewals at €110.90 = €420.80 (at today's shop prices); with lifetime free updates, the manufacturers state that the purchase price is all you pay.
4. Have compatibility checked first: send us your vehicle and VIN – we will tell you which tool fits before you buy.
Our recommendation
For occasional code reading and service resets on your own car, a smartphone adapter such as the MUCAR BT200 MAX is often enough – with lifetime free updates according to MUCAR. If you want a standalone tool with a display, the TOPDON ArtiDiag800 BT2 is a compact handheld. If you look after several vehicles and also want to code, a tablet such as the MUCAR 892BT or THINKSCAN 689BT is a good fit. For topology view and J2534 there are the Pro versions, e.g. the MUCAR 892BT Pro for €699.00.

FAQ
What is the best scan tool for DIY mechanics?
There is no single tool that suits everyone. What matters are your vehicles and tasks: for reading codes and service resets, a smartphone adapter such as the MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) is often enough. For several vehicles, active tests and coding, tablets such as the MUCAR 892BT or THINKSCAN 689BT are suitable. Have compatibility checked with your VIN first.
Is an OBD2 adapter for my smartphone enough?
A basic OBD2 adapter usually only reads emissions-related faults. Adapters such as the MUCAR BT200 MAX or the TopScan Pro offer full-system diagnostics, service functions and active tests according to manufacturer or shop information – depending on the vehicle. You need your own smartphone or tablet for them.
Can I code with a tool up to €700?
According to MUCAR, the 892BT supports ECU coding; according to THINKCAR UK, so does the THINKSCAN 689BT – vehicle-dependent in each case. Which coding is possible on your car depends on model, year, control unit and software version.
What happens after the update year on the TopScan Pro?
The TopScan Pro includes one year of updates. The renewal costs €110.90 per year with us (as of 25 Oct 2026). According to TOPDON, the basic OBD2 functions remain usable without a renewal; an active license is required for the full range of functions.
Do I need a Security Gateway unlock?
On newer vehicles with a Security Gateway – e.g. from FCA, Mercedes, Renault/Dacia or the VW Group – advanced functions are often restricted without an unlock. The unlock is usually chargeable and not included in the tool price. More in our Security Gateway guide.
Will the tool work with my car?
Send us the make, model, year and VIN. Before you buy, we check which tool and which functions are suitable for your vehicle.
