J2534 Pass-Thru Explained: Using OEM Software with an Aftermarket Scan Tool
With J2534 pass-thru, a scan tool becomes the interface between a PC and the vehicle: the carmaker's original software – such as ODIS, ISTA or XENTRY – runs programming and diagnostic procedures through this interface. We explain what the standard does, what else you need and which J2534 tools from our range have been tested with which software according to their manufacturers (prices as of 26 Oct 2026).

J2534 in three points
- ⌘What J2534 isSAE J2534-1 describes a standardised interface between a PC and the vehicle. According to SAE, the software that controls this interface and performs the actual reprogramming is provided by the vehicle manufacturer. The goal: software from any carmaker should work with interfaces from any tool maker.
- ⇄What else you needA PC with the carmaker's original software and – depending on the brand – an account, licence or subscription. MUCAR and THINKCAR state clearly that OEM software, accounts and subscriptions are not included and must be obtained separately. For programming, Autel lists a stable internet connection and a battery maintainer.
- ✦What EU rules sayAccording to Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/699 (amending Annex X of Regulation 2018/858), reprogramming, variant coding and parts activation are to be possible with non-proprietary hardware – under ISO 22900-2, SAE J2534-1, SAE J2534-2, TMC RP1210B or ISO/DIS 17978-1. Over Ethernet, the regulation names ISO 22900-2 or J2534-2.
J2534 is not a free pass
MUCAR and THINKCAR both answer “Can I program every vehicle with it?” with no: what works depends on the vehicle, the OEM software, licences or subscriptions and the specific procedure. One example: according to Mercedes-Benz, XENTRY Pass Thru EU can only be ordered by companies based in the EU, EEA, Switzerland or the UK – with an annual fee, time credits and a permanent online connection. How to use OEM software with a J2534 tool
1. Check whether the carmaker offers pass-thru-capable software for your model – and on what terms (account, licence, fees, region).
2. Prepare the PC to the carmaker's system requirements and set up the J2534 tool following the tool maker's instructions.
3. Before programming, ensure stable voltage (battery maintainer) and a stable internet connection. Autel warns: if programming is interrupted, the control unit may become unrecoverable.
4. Have compatibility checked first: send us make, model, year, VIN, control unit and the function you need.
Our recommendation
If you want a diagnostic tablet and J2534 in one tool, the MUCAR 892BT Pro (€699.00) and the THINKSCAN 689BT Pro (€699.90) share the same list of tested OEM platforms and, per their manufacturers, free lifetime updates – see our direct comparison of the two. The AUTEL MaxiSys Elite II Pro (€2,109.00) offers a 9.7-inch tablet and the MaxiFlash VCI, which per Autel supports D-PDU, SAE J2534 and RP1210. If you don't need J2534, the MUCAR 892BT (€599.90) is often enough – see 892BT vs 892BT Pro.

FAQ
What is J2534 pass-thru?
SAE J2534 is a standard for the interface between a PC and the vehicle. A J2534 tool passes the commands of the manufacturer software on the PC to the control units – for example for software updates or programming new control units. According to SAE, the software itself is provided by the vehicle manufacturer.
Is the OEM software (ODIS, ISTA, XENTRY …) included?
No. Per MUCAR and THINKCAR, OEM software, accounts, licences and subscriptions are not included and must be obtained separately from the vehicle manufacturer or an authorised provider.
Can I program every vehicle with J2534?
No. Per MUCAR and THINKCAR, J2534 functions depend on the vehicle, the OEM software, required licences or subscriptions and the specific procedure. Some jobs require additional authorisation.
Which OEM software were the tools tested with?
MUCAR (892BT Pro) and THINKCAR (689BT Pro) list tests with Toyota Techstream, Honda HDS, Volvo VIDA, ODIS, BMW ISTA, Ford IDS/FDRS, Subaru SSM4, GM GDS2, wiTECH 2.0, Mercedes-Benz XENTRY and Jaguar Land Rover SDD. For the AUTEL MaxiSys Elite II Pro, Autel names a J2534-1/-2 compliant pass-thru interface; the Autel information we checked did not include a platform list.
Do I need a PC?
Yes, for the OEM software: per SAE, J2534 connects a PC to the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz, for example, lists a Windows PC with a J2534 device for XENTRY Pass Thru EU. The exact system requirements are set by each vehicle manufacturer.
Will it work with my car?
Send us make, model, year, VIN, the control unit concerned and the function you need. We check before you buy which tool is suitable.
