Read car fault codes yourself: steps and scanner selection
Reading fault codes helps you understand a vehicle problem and prepare for a workshop visit. A code is a starting point for investigation, not proof that a particular part needs replacing. Follow your vehicle and diagnostic tool manuals for connection and ignition requirements.
Choosing the right tool
A compatible OBD socket does not guarantee access to ABS, airbags, transmission or every control unit. Basic OBD2 covers emissions-related engine diagnostics; further systems require suitable manufacturer-specific coverage. Service functions, coding and programming must be checked for the exact vehicle.
Step by step
- Record the vehicle, engine and symptoms. Check that the tool supports the relevant system.
- Park safely and secure the vehicle against rolling. Operate the tool while stationary.
- Locate the diagnostic socket using the vehicle manual. Connect without force in the order specified by the tool manufacturer.
- Connect the tablet or phone as instructed. Check automatic vehicle identification and correct the selection if necessary.
- Read the supported scan or control unit. Save the full code, description, status and available freeze-frame data before making changes.
- Compare the results with the symptoms and measurements. Investigate the cause before clearing codes.
Reading or clearing codes?
Reading collects information; clearing changes stored diagnostic data. Clearing a code does not repair the fault, and the code may return. Save the report first. After repair, check the result using the vehicle-specific procedure. Freeze-frame data is not available for every fault or system.
Phone use and connection problems
Phone-based scanning requires a compatible adapter, app, operating system and vehicle. If connection fails, check the connection, power, ignition state, wireless link and vehicle selection according to the manual; do not select a different vehicle at random.
Warning lights
A code alone cannot tell you whether driving is safe. Follow the vehicle manual and warning display. With a flashing engine warning or severe juddering, avoid further engine load and seek professional help. Urgent oil-pressure, temperature or brake warnings take priority over scanning.
