Steering angle sensor calibration: how to reset the SAS with a scan tool
The ESC light comes on after a wheel alignment, or the car flags a steering warning? Then the steering angle sensor (SAS) often needs to be recalibrated. We explain when that is necessary, how zeroing works, when it works without a scan tool – and which tools in our shop offer an SAS function (prices as of 05.11.2026).

What a scan tool should do for the steering angle sensor
- ⌘Zero the steering angle (SAS reset)The SAS function resets the sensor's straight-ahead position – depending on tool, model and year in a menu called “Steering angle”, “SAS” or similar.
- ⇄ABS/ESC fault memoryA badly calibrated sensor often shows up via the stability or traction control light (Delphi). The tool reads and clears the codes in the relevant control unit.
- ✦Live data and checksAfter calibration, check the steering angle in the straight-ahead position in live data, read the fault memory again and do a short road test (Snap-on).
Connection in the driver's footwell
The scan tool plugs into the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell under the steering wheel. Ideally select the vehicle by VIN – the tool then only shows the SAS functions available for your model.
Steering angle sensor calibration with a scan tool: 4 steps
This is how zeroing the steering angle sensor typically works – the tool shows the exact menus and conditions for your vehicle:
- PreparePark the car on level ground – according to Delphi, most manufacturers recommend calibrating on the ground rather than on a lift. Wheels straight, stable battery voltage (VCDS states at least 12.0 V for VW). Connect the tool to the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell, select the vehicle by VIN and read the fault memory.
- Select the functionChoose “Steering angle” or “SAS” in the service menu. On VW, the basic setting of steering angle sensor G85 is in the brake electronics control unit (03) according to the VCDS wiki; on other makes it may be in another module.
- CalibrateFollow the prompts: keep the steering wheel straight and do not move it during the routine, keep the engine running and do not switch off the ignition (VCDS wiki). Some models ask you to turn the wheel from lock to lock (Delphi).
- CheckStart the engine and make sure the ABS warning light is off, then do a short road test (Snap-on). Read the fault memory again and clear any remaining codes.
Steering angle sensor reset without a scanner?
Sometimes – according to Delphi it depends on make and model. Some vehicles self-calibrate when the wheel is turned from lock to lock, back to centre and the ignition is cycled. Others zero the sensor themselves when driven straight for a while. Some vehicles require a scan tool. The manufacturer's repair instructions tell you which method applies.
When must the steering angle sensor be calibrated?
According to Delphi after a wheel alignment or after replacing a component that can change toe angles. Using a Peugeot 207 as an example, Snap-on also lists replacing the sensor or ESP control unit and work on the steering column or front axle. On some vehicles a complete reset includes other sensors such as torque angle or yaw rate sensors (Hunter).
Bad steering angle sensor? Typical symptoms
According to Delphi and HELLA, these signs point to a faulty or un-zeroed sensor:
- Stability or traction control warning light, sometimes the engine light (Delphi)
- Steering wheel “wobbles” or the steering does not respond as expected (Delphi)
- Steering angle and direction of travel do not match after suspension work – problems with the stability program (HELLA)
- Assistance systems such as lane keep assist, ACC or dynamic headlights do not work correctly (Delphi, Snap-on)
If the code cannot be cleared after calibration, the sensor itself may be faulty: Delphi says it is subject to wear and can be damaged during steering work. Whether a camera or radar must also be calibrated after an alignment is defined by the vehicle manufacturer.

Steering angle sensor reset: garage or your own scan tool?
1. Garage: calibration usually together with the wheel alignment; according to Delphi some alignment systems have a built-in SAS reset. The price depends on the garage.
2. Your own scan tool: buy once and use after every toe adjustment or steering part – plus fault codes, oil service, EPB or DPF, e.g. MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90).
3. Without a tool: only if your model self-calibrates according to the manufacturer (lock to lock or road test).
Our recommendation
For DIYers with a smartphone: MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) with lifetime updates. If you want a standalone tablet with coding, choose the THINKSCAN 689BT (€679.90), the MUCAR 892BT Pro (€699.00) or the THINKSCAN 689BT Pro (€699.90) with topology and J2534. For workshops, the TOPDON Phoenix Lite 3 (€814.90) fits. What “lifetime updates” means is explained in Scan tool without subscription. Send us your VIN – we check the SAS function before you buy.

FAQ
Can I calibrate the steering angle sensor with a scan tool?
On many vehicles, yes: the SAS function resets the straight-ahead position. According to manufacturer and product information, tools with an SAS function include the MUCAR BT200 MAX, THINKSCAN 689BT, MUCAR 892BT Pro, THINKSCAN 689BT Pro and Phoenix Lite 3. Whether it is available for your model depends on year and equipment – we are happy to check by VIN.
Does it work without a scan tool?
On some models, yes: according to Delphi, some vehicles self-calibrate (wheel lock to lock, back to centre, ignition off and on) or during a straight drive. Others require a scan tool – the manufacturer's instructions are decisive.
Does the steering angle sensor need calibrating after a wheel alignment?
Often, yes. According to Delphi the sensor must be zeroed after an alignment or after replacing parts that can change toe; Hunter calls the reset a necessary last step of an alignment. Whether your car requires it is defined by the manufacturer.
How much does a steering angle sensor calibration cost?
Garage prices depend on the business and the vehicle; there is no reliable flat rate. Your own scan tool with SAS function starts at €96.90 in our shop (MUCAR BT200 MAX) – also usable for fault codes, oil service and EPB.
How do I reset the steering angle sensor on a VW?
According to the VCDS wiki via the basic setting of steering angle sensor G85 in the brake electronics module: level surface, wheels straight, do not move the wheel, engine running, at least 12.0 V. On newer VAG vehicles some module functions are also protected by SFD – see our article on VAG SFD.
What are the symptoms of a bad steering angle sensor?
According to Delphi, typical signs are an illuminated stability or traction control light and unusual steering behaviour. If steering angle and direction of travel do not match, HELLA says the stability program may have problems. Read the fault memory first, then calibrate; if the fault remains, have the sensor and wiring checked.
