Oil service reset with a scan tool: how to reset the service light

Oil changed, but the display still says “Service due”? Then the service interval indicator has to be reset. We explain which intervals exist, how a reset with a scan tool works, when it works without one, what matters for the warranty – and which tools in our shop offer an oil service function (prices as of 07.11.2026).

What a scan tool should do for a service reset

  • ⌘
Reset oil service and inspectionThe service function resets the counter in the instrument cluster – depending on tool, model and year in a menu called “Oil service”, “Service reset” or “Maintenance”. On VW, oil service and inspection are separate intervals (VCDS wiki).
  • ⇄
Select individual itemsWith CBS, BMW counts every item separately, such as engine oil, brakes or brake fluid. According to BMW, a reset sets the selected item to 100% availability and increases the service counter.
  • ✦
Set intervals correctlyOn VW, a reset via the instrument cluster can switch to a fixed interval; returning to the flexible interval is done via adaptation channels with model-specific values (VCDS wiki).

Connection in the driver's footwell

The scan tool plugs into the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell under the steering wheel. Ideally select the vehicle by VIN – the tool then only shows the service functions available for your model.

Service reset with a scan tool: 4 steps

This is how a reset typically works – the tool shows the exact menus and conditions for your vehicle:

  1. PrepareDo the work in the service schedule first, then reset. Ignition on, engine off. For stable voltage the VCDS guide recommends a battery charger (at least 35 A) and switching off start-stop on cars that have it. Connect the tool to the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell and select the vehicle by VIN.
  2. Select the functionChoose “Oil service” or “Service reset” in the service menu. On VW the service intervals are stored in the instrument cluster (control unit 17) according to the VCDS wiki; on BMW each CBS item is selected individually.
  3. Reset only what was doneOnly reset the interval that was actually due or carried out (VCDS guide) – otherwise important work may be forgotten. Brake fluid, for example, ages over time and according to ADAC is usually replaced every two years.
  4. CheckSwitch the ignition off and on again (VCDS wiki: off for about 30 seconds) and check the service display. After resetting to flexible intervals, a VW cluster may show only “---” for up to 500 km until it has calculated the new remaining distance (VCDS wiki).

Service reset without a scan tool?

On many models the oil service can also be reset via the on-board menu or buttons on the instrument cluster – the owner's manual explains how. One example is the Audi Q5: according to its manual, only the oil change indicator can be reset via the CAR menu; afterwards a fixed interval of 15,000 km or one year applies. To keep the LongLife service, a specialist workshop must reset it. Depending on the vehicle, a scan tool can also reset the inspection and individual items.

When does the service have to be reset?

After every oil change or inspection – according to ADAC, the professional resets the oil change interval indicator at the end of the oil change. If you change the oil yourself, you have to do it yourself. According to the Audi manual, the indicator should not be reset between intervals, otherwise it shows incorrect values. How often oil is changed is set by the manufacturer: according to ADAC, for example, every 30,000 km or one year at Opel, flexible up to 30,000 km or fixed every 15,000 km at Audi.

Typical mistakes during a service reset

These points are mentioned by VCDS, Audi, BMW and ADAC:

  • Wrong interval reset – due work such as brake fluid or timing belt is then no longer displayed (VCDS wiki)
  • LongLife accidentally switched to a fixed interval, e.g. when resetting via the on-board menu (Audi manual)
  • Wrong CBS item reset on a BMW – according to BMW this can only be corrected with “CBS vehicle data correction” in the BMW diagnosis system
  • Reset without maintenance – brake fluid ages regardless of mileage (ADAC)

Important: a reset is not proof of maintenance. According to ADAC, an EU-wide rule means the manufacturer must accept an inspection at an independent garage if it follows the manufacturer's specifications – keep the invoice and the service book entry. On newer VAG vehicles, the service reset may also be protected by SFD.

Service reset: garage, on-board menu or your own scan tool?

1. Garage: reset and service book entry are part of the oil change or inspection; according to ADAC an oil change costs from approx. €100 even at chains.
2. On-board menu: possible for the oil service on many models, sometimes only with a fixed interval (example Audi Q5).
3. Your own scan tool: buy once and use after every oil change – plus fault codes, EPB or DPF, e.g. MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) or MittmannLive TopScan Pro (€199.00).

Our recommendation

For DIYers with a smartphone: MUCAR BT200 MAX (€96.90) with lifetime updates or MittmannLive TopScan Pro (€199.00). If you want a standalone tablet with coding, choose the MUCAR 892BT Pro (€799.00) or the THINKSCAN 689BT Pro (€799.00) with topology and J2534. For workshops, the TOPDON Phoenix Lite 3 (€814.90) fits. What “lifetime updates” means is explained in Scan tool without subscription. FAQ

Can I reset the service with a scan tool?

On many vehicles, yes: the oil service or service reset function resets the service interval indicator. According to product information, tools with this function include the MUCAR BT200 MAX, TopScan Pro, MUCAR 892BT Pro, THINKSCAN 689BT Pro and Phoenix Lite 3. Whether it is available for your model depends on year and equipment – we are happy to check by VIN.

Does it work without a scan tool?

On many models, yes, at least for the oil service – via the on-board menu or cluster buttons as described in the owner's manual. On the Audi Q5, the manual says a fixed interval of 15,000 km or one year applies afterwards; for LongLife a specialist workshop must reset it.

Can an OBD2 adapter reset the service light?

Only if the tool or app has a service reset function for your make. The reset is a manufacturer-specific function – on VW, for example, in the instrument cluster (control unit 17) according to the VCDS wiki. A plain code reader without a service menu is not enough.

Do I lose the warranty if I reset the service myself?

What matters is the maintenance, not the reset: according to ADAC, an EU-wide rule means manufacturers must accept inspections at independent garages if the manufacturer's specifications are followed. The reset alone is no proof – keep the invoice and service book entry.

How do I reset the service on a VW?

According to the VCDS wiki in the instrument cluster (control unit 17) via adaptation channels: oil service via “WIV: reset”, inspection separately by time and distance. Scan tools with a service function guide you through these steps. On newer VAG vehicles the reset may be protected by SFD – see our article on VAG SFD.

How do I reset BMW service (CBS)?

On a BMW, every CBS item is reset individually, e.g. engine oil, brakes or brake fluid; according to BMW the item is then at 100%. Only reset what has been serviced. More on BMW scan tools in our BMW comparison.
