Car wiring diagrams and repair database: where to find, how to read – cars and trucks
A fault code tells you what the control unit is complaining about – the wiring diagram shows you where to measure. Whether online, as software or as a PDF: we explain how to read a wiring diagram, what manufacturer portals and multi-brand repair databases offer, and when a single repair guide is enough. With prices from our shop (as of 01.11.2026).

What a repair database provides
- ⌘Wiring diagrams & pin-outsElectrical diagrams for engine management, ABS/ESP, airbag, lighting, comfort systems and starting/charging – with connectors, pin assignments, wire colours, measured and voltage values, fuses, relays and component locations.
- ⇄Repair guides & torque specsIllustrated procedures for engine, timing chain and timing belt, clutch, brakes, suspension and body – with tightening torques, tightening sequences, adjustment and test values, fluid capacities and special tools.
- ✦Maintenance, fault codes & case libraryService schedules, fault code lookup, labour times for quotes and – depending on the vehicle – known faults, recalls and technical service bulletins.
Scan tool and database complement each other
The scan tool, plugged into the OBD2 socket in the driver's footwell under the steering wheel, shows which fault is stored. The wiring diagram shows where to measure: connector, pin, wire colour and target value. Why a fault code does not automatically condemn the part is explained in Understanding fault codes.
Reading a car wiring diagram: from fault code to measurement in 4 steps
How to use a scan tool and a wiring diagram together – using a sensor fault as an example:
- Read the fault codeConnect the scan tool to the OBD2 socket in the driver's footwell under the steering wheel, read the fault memory and check the live data of the affected system. Note the code and fault text.
- Select the exact vehicleChoose by manufacturer, series, model, engine and engine code or by the German KBA number (registration certificate field 2.1 manufacturer code, field 2.2 type code). A wrong engine code quickly leads to the wrong diagram.
- Open the system in the diagramFor example engine management: read the control unit, connectors, pin assignment, wire colours and target voltages. Fuses, relays and component locations show where the part and connector sit.
- Measure instead of replacingCompare supply, ground and signal at the connector with the target values. Only when wiring and supply are fine is the component itself a suspect.
Terminal designations: 30, 15, 31 and more
German wiring diagrams label terminals according to DIN 72552: 30 = positive directly from the battery (permanent positive), 15 = switched positive via the ignition switch, 31 = ground, 50 = starter control, 85/86 = relay control circuit and 87 = relay load circuit. Some manufacturers also use their own designations.
Manufacturer portal or multi-brand database?
EU Regulation 2018/858 (Art. 61) requires vehicle manufacturers to give independent workshops access to repair and maintenance information – usually through their own paid portal per brand, at Volkswagen for example erWin (€8.40 net per hour up to €3,420.00 net for 365 days, as of 01.11.2026). If you repair many brands, a multi-brand database keeps everything in one place; for programming with original software, the manufacturer portal remains the way (see J2534 pass-thru explained).
What is inside the repair database for cars + trucks?
According to our product page – scope and level of detail vary by manufacturer, model, year and engine:
- Illustrated repair guides for engine, timing chain/belt, clutch, brakes, suspension and body
- Tightening torques and sequences, adjustment and test values, fluid capacities and special tools
- Electrical wiring diagrams with pin-outs, wire colours, voltage and measured values, fuses and relays
- Service schedules, fault code lookup and labour times for quotes
- Case library with known faults, recalls and service bulletins (vehicle-dependent)
- Hybrid and high voltage, e.g. de-energising procedures – work only by qualified technicians
- Dedicated truck section, incl. DAF, Ford Trucks, Isuzu, Iveco, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Fuso, Renault Trucks, Scania and Volvo Trucks
For a single job a single guide is often enough: timing belt replacement or clutch replacement as a vehicle-specific PDF by email for €14.99 each. Just send us the key numbers, year and engine or a photo of the registration certificate.

Car wiring diagrams for free, as a PDF or as a database?
1. Free single finds (forums, PDF files): check that model, year, engine code and equipment really match – a diagram for different equipment can show different pins and wire colours.
2. Single guide as a PDF: useful for one specific job such as the timing belt or clutch, €14.99 each.
3. Repair database: for anyone who regularly works on different cars and trucks – 1-year licence for €411.84.
4. Manufacturer portal: when you need original data for one brand or program with original software.
Our recommendation
If you regularly work on different vehicles – cars and trucks alike – the repair database for cars + trucks (€411.84, 1 year) gives you wiring diagrams, torque specs, service schedules and labour times in one place. For a single repair, the matching PDF guide (€14.99) is enough. To read the faults you also need a scan tool, for example the MUCAR 892BT Pro (€699.00); we compare more tools in Best scan tool for DIY mechanics. We are happy to check before you buy whether your vehicle is covered.

FAQ
Where can I find wiring diagrams for my car?
From the vehicle manufacturer (repair portal, usually paid), in multi-brand repair databases such as our repair database for cars + trucks, or as a vehicle-specific PDF for single jobs. What matters is selecting the exact vehicle with engine code or key numbers.
Are car wiring diagrams available for free?
Individual diagrams can be found in forums and as PDFs. Whether they match the model, year, engine and equipment of your vehicle cannot always be verified there. For reliable target values, use manufacturer information or a database with exact vehicle selection.
What do terminals 30, 15 and 31 mean?
According to DIN 72552: 30 = permanent positive directly from the battery, 15 = switched positive (ignition on), 31 = ground. Other common terminals are 50 (starter), 85/86 (relay control circuit) and 87 (relay load circuit).
Does the repair database include trucks?
Yes. According to the product page there is a dedicated section for trucks and commercial vehicles, incl. DAF, Ford Trucks, Isuzu, Iveco, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Fuso, Renault Trucks, Scania and Volvo Trucks – the scope depends on the vehicle.
How long is the repair database licence valid?
The repair database for cars + trucks is sold as a 1-year licence. Scope and level of detail depend on manufacturer, model, year and engine – feel free to ask us about your vehicles beforehand.
Does the database replace a scan tool?
No. The scan tool reads fault memory and live data and runs service functions; the database provides wiring diagrams, target values and procedures. Together they get you from fault code to cause faster – see Understanding fault codes.
