Best Scan Tool for VW and Audi: Coding, SFD Unlock and Prices 2026
If you want to diagnose and code a VW, Audi, Škoda or SEAT yourself, newer models quickly confront you with SFD – the Volkswagen Group's diagnostic protection. We compare four scan tools from our range for VAG vehicles, explain SFD and SFD2 and show what unlocking costs (prices as of 27 Oct 2026).

VW and Audi: what you need to know
- ⌘What SFD meansSFD (Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose, “vehicle diagnostic protection”) protects the control units of newer VAG vehicles against unauthorised changes. Per TOPDON, this affects VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT on the MQB Evo and MEB platforms, such as the Golf 8 and the ID. models, typically from 2019. Per OBDeleven, reading faults and live data still works – coding, adaptations and parametrisation are blocked without an unlock.
- ⇄SFD2 – the second levelSFD2 runs in parallel to SFD1 and, per OBDeleven, mainly affects Volkswagen Group vehicles from 2024 (per OBDeleven's list e.g. Golf 8 from 1 Apr 2024, ID.4 from 15 Jan 2024, Audi A3 8Y from 2025). It does not open the whole control unit: protected values are written in directly via online access, signed by the manufacturer. Today that is only possible through VW's own access. MUCAR does not support SFD2 at present.
- ✦What you really needPer VW documents, reading fault codes and live data works on SFD vehicles even without an unlock. For everyday jobs such as a service/inspection reset or the electric parking brake, newer VAG vehicles usually need SFD1 – in our shop as a one-year licence: MUCAR €289.90, THINKCAR €349.00, TOPDON €214.90. If you want to work with the OEM software ODIS, you also need a PC and a J2534 device.
Before you buy: VIN check
Whether coding or unlocking works on your vehicle depends on the tool, software version, model, year, control unit and region. Per TOPDON, unlocking needs an internet connection, and the gateway locks again after the session. Send us your VIN, model, year and the function you need – we check in advance. Background: Security Gateway (SGW) explained.
SGW, SFD1, SFD2 – the levels explained simply
These terms often get mixed up. In the past, everything was called a “token” or “VAG unlock”. In fact there are several protection levels that were introduced one after another:
- Security Gateway (SGW) with a codeAt first, access was protected by a code: to code or adapt control units, you entered a login code. According to VW documents, this method no longer met the state of the art.
- Online security loginNext came signing in through the manufacturer's online access. At VW this happens in the OEM software ODIS with a personal account and a two-factor code (GeKo).
- SFD1 with tokensOn newer vehicles (per TOPDON typically from 2019, e.g. Golf 8 and ID. models) the control unit is unlocked with a token. A new token is generated for each unlock, is valid only for that vehicle and expires after a short time (per industry sources usually after about 90 minutes).
- SFD2 in parallelMainly on models from 2024 there is also SFD2. It does not open the whole control unit: protected values, for example in coding, are written in directly via online access, signed by the manufacturer.
What does this mean in practice?
With SFD1 tokens you can still code and adapt control units. Special tasks in which a control unit is paired (“married”) to the vehicle, for example in connection with component protection, go through SFD2 or the manufacturer's direct online access instead.
What does MUCAR support?
MUCAR supports SFD (= SFD1). SFD2 is currently only possible through VW's own access; MUCAR does not support SFD2 at present. The range of functions may change through manufacturer updates. We will inform our customers if anything changes – we do not give dates or guarantees.
What SFD1 is typically needed for
On newer VAG vehicles, SFD1 may be needed for everyday jobs like these – depending on vehicle, control unit and function:
- Resetting the service or inspection interval
- Putting the electric parking brake into service mode, e.g. when changing brake pads
- Basic settings and adaptations after maintenance or repair work
- Coding and parametrisation, e.g. on the central electrics, instrument cluster, airbag or infotainment
Reading fault codes and live data also works without an unlock. Whether a function needs SFD1 on your vehicle and whether your tool supports it depends on the tool, software version, vehicle, model year and control unit – we check this in advance using your VIN.

How to find the right tool for your VW or Audi
1. Define the goal: only reading faults – or also service resets, parking brake, adaptations and coding?
2. Check year and platform: on newer models (per TOPDON MQB Evo and MEB, typically from 2019) such jobs usually need an SFD1 unlock. SFD2 is currently not possible with MUCAR tools.
3. Budget for licences: the VAG licences run for 1 year and are activated using tool model, serial number and account email. For TOPDON, an active software subscription is also required per the manufacturer.
4. VIN check: send us VIN, model, year and the function you need – we check before you buy.
Our recommendation
For VW and Audi drivers who want to diagnose and code themselves, the MUCAR 892BT (€599.90) with ECU coding and, per MUCAR, free lifetime updates is the most affordable entry. If you also want to work with ODIS, choose the MUCAR 892BT Pro (€699.00) – tested with ODIS per MUCAR (see 892BT vs 892BT Pro and J2534 pass-thru explained). The THINKSCAN 689BT (€679.90) offers ECU coding and lifetime updates per THINKCAR UK. The TOPDON Phoenix Lite 3 (€814.90) offers topology, online coding and a VAG guide per TOPDON; 2 years of updates are included (shop info).

FAQ
Which is the best scan tool for VW and Audi?
It depends on the job. Per their manufacturers, the MUCAR 892BT, 892BT Pro and THINKSCAN 689BT offer ECU coding and free lifetime updates. For SFD-protected control units, every tool needs a separate licence. If you want to work with ODIS, you need a J2534 tool such as the 892BT Pro.
What is SFD on VW?
SFD protects the control units of newer Volkswagen Group vehicles against unauthorised changes. Per OBDeleven, reading faults and live data remain possible; coding, adaptations and parametrisation are blocked until the control unit is unlocked.
Does MUCAR support SFD2?
No, not at present. MUCAR supports SFD (= SFD1). SFD2 is currently only possible through VW's own online access. The range of functions may change through manufacturer updates; we will inform our customers if anything changes – we do not give dates or guarantees.
How much does a VAG unlock cost?
We offer one-year licences: MUCAR VAG SFD Gateway Unlock for €289.90, THINKCAR VAG SGW unlock for €349.00 and TOPDON VAG SFD for €214.90 – each 1 year, digital, for one compatible tool. For TOPDON, an active software subscription is also required per the manufacturer.
Do I need ODIS?
Not for diagnostics and coding with the tablets compared here. ODIS is the Volkswagen Group's OEM software; it requires a PC and a J2534 device. Per MUCAR, the 892BT Pro was tested with ODIS – ODIS itself, the account and the licence are not included.
Will it work with my VW, Audi, Škoda or SEAT?
Send us VIN, model, year, the control unit concerned and the function you need. We check before you buy which tool and which licence are suitable.
