Security Gateway (SGW) explained: which brands lock OBD access and how to unlock
More and more vehicles protect access through the OBD port with a security gateway (SGW). Without an unlock, the scan tool reports that full diagnostics are not possible. We explain where this comes from, which manufacturer groups are affected and which license fits MUCAR, THINKSCAN and TOPDON (as of 10/2026).

How to spot a locked gateway
The scan tool reads the VIN, detects the installed control units and reports when a security gateway is fitted: full diagnostics are then only possible after unlocking. That is how Launch Europe describes it for its X-431 tools; the exact message depends on the device.
