Best Diagnostic Tool for Mercedes? SGW, XENTRY and the Right License
Newer Mercedes-Benz models protect diagnostic access with a Security Gateway (SGW). So the “best” scan tool is one with a matching Mercedes unlock, support for your vehicle's protocols and – if you want to flash – J2534 for XENTRY Pass Thru. Mercedes diagnostics: three points before you buy
- ⌘Security GatewayLaunch Europe lists, among others, the model series C 206, S 223, GLC 254, AMG GT 192, SL 232, EQE 294/295, EQS 296/297 as Mercedes models with SGW. Without an unlock, MUCAR maker Automan says SGW vehicles usually only allow reading codes, data streams and version info.
- ⇄DoIP and CAN-FDAccording to Mercedes-Benz B2B Connect, model series 206 and 223 are pure DoIP series. MUCAR 892BT Pro and THINKSCAN 689BT Pro support CAN-FD and DoIP according to their makers – coverage depends on the vehicle.
- ✦J2534 for XENTRYOEM software needs a J2534 device. MUCAR (892BT Pro) and THINKCAR (689BT Pro) state they have tested J2534 with Mercedes-Benz XENTRY; the software is not included.
SGW license or XENTRY Pass Thru?
The SGW license runs in your tablet's software: 1 year from activation, bound to the serial number. XENTRY Pass Thru EU is Mercedes' software for independent workshops on a Windows PC with a J2534 device – according to Mercedes with an annual fee plus time credits, a permanent online connection and a personal login; it can only be ordered by companies based in the EU, EEA, Switzerland or UK.

Checklist: the right Mercedes scan tool
1. Check the vehicle: model series, year and VIN – whether an SGW is fitted depends on the model.
2. Match the license to the tool: the MUCAR license is for compatible MUCAR tools, the THINKCAR license for compatible THINKCAR tools; both are bound to the serial number.
3. Keep the software up to date and provide internet – required for online activation.
4. Flashing or programming ECUs with OEM software? Then you need a J2534 device (892BT Pro or 689BT Pro) plus XENTRY Pass Thru EU separately. For pure DoIP series, Mercedes names its own tested DoIP adapters.
Our recommendation
For most workshops a tablet with a Mercedes SGW license fits: the MUCAR 892BT Pro with the MUCAR Mercedes SGW license or the THINKSCAN 689BT Pro with the THINKCAR Mercedes SGW unlock.
